Singer-songwriter Akemi Fox shares her silky vocals and sweet harmonies, embodying a real sincere warmth. The R&B Renaissance.
Please introduce us to Akemi - What brings you joy?
Hey I am Akemi Fox (a-kay-me and then Fox like the animal). I am a singer/songwriter from Manchester and love to make alternative R&B music.
I would say matcha, having a me day which involves me sitting in the cafe with a matcha and my book, to me that is joy. Another joy of my life is performing and connecting with the audience. I have a massive passion for fashion so planning outfits for general life or shows is forever exciting to me.
How has your background influenced your sound and expression?
Manchester has shaped me as an artist, there is such a rich music history here so that has inspired me. Especially the soul scene, and the R&B scene in Manchester has inspired me to make the music I do, like Children of Zeus, Pip Millett & IAMDDB.
My Dad named me after a musician called Akemi Kuniyoshi, I guess being named after a musician had some secret effect in making me a musician too haha. But I grew up in a house filled with lots of music from jazz from my Dad and punk, rock, and R&B from my Mum.
Is there an artist that is serving as your life's soundtrack right now?
Hiatus Kaiyote. I saw them live this year and it was such a spiritual experience. Their music is uplifting, interesting, and powerful. I find myself hypnotized by Nai Palm's voice. I just love my outlook on music when I listen to their music, it makes me so inspired.
Your vocals and style embodies a real sincere warmth - How do you feel when performing, creating? How do the audience inspire you?
Aww thank you so much. I feel so good, I think this year I've started to feel completely at home on stage, I feel the lyrics flow through me and I feel I don't even have to think. I find creating music challenging but amazing, I am a bit of a perfectionist so at times it feels frustrating but the final product is always worth it.
